All lessons are taught by video, with textbooks, and can be repeated as often as needed during the course period.

The certification you receive

1.
Japanese Cooking Fundamental Skills Certification: Advanced Level.
A certificate of course completion is issued.
The certification is issued by The Association for the Advancement of the Japanese Culinary Art and Sunnylive, Inc.

2.
Optional: the Bronze Certification of Cooking Skills for Japanese Cuisine in Foreign Countries.
Students who choose the MAFF Bronze option and pass the Advanced Level examination are registered for this certification, established by Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), and receive a Bronze certificate and a bronze medal.

The MAFF Bronze certification is not available to Japanese nationals. If you are unsure about eligibility, please ask us before enrolling.

All prices are in US dollars and include the examination fee and certificate issuance fee.

Option A · Advanced Level certification

Option B · with MAFF Bronze certification

Course feeper person, both certifications included $670

Includes registration for the MAFF Bronze certification.
Not available to Japanese nationals.

  2. Course start. The course starts within a few business days.
    Detailed information about the course and the textbook is sent by e-mail in advance, and your login ID is issued.
  3. Examination and assignment submission. Book your examination and submit your assignments during the course period.
    Learning is self-paced and available 24 hours a day.
  4. Completion and issuance of the certificate. You receive your examination and assignment results together with the certificate.
    During the course period you can keep viewing the content even after the examination is over.
    Registering as a member afterwards is a separate procedure.

Do I need any previous experience or qualification?

The Advanced Course is for students who have completed the Intermediate Course.
If you have not, start with the Intermediate Course or choose the Advanced Intensive Course, which has no prerequisite.

How long does the course take?

The course takes 3 weeks to 3 months, depending on the pace of study.
Learning is self-paced and available 24 hours a day, and the content can be viewed again during the course period even after the examination.

What language is the course in?

The cooking videos are narrated in English, and the textbooks and the examination are in English as well.

How is the course assessed?

Through assignments submitted during the course and an examination taken online during the course period.
Results are sent together with the certificate.

What certificate do I receive?

The Japanese Cooking Fundamental Skills Certification: Advanced Level, together with a certificate of course completion.
It is issued by The Association for the Advancement of the Japanese Culinary Art and Sunnylive, Inc.
Students who choose the MAFF Bronze option and pass the examination also receive the Bronze certificate and bronze medal of the Certification of Cooking Skills for Japanese Cuisine in Foreign Countries.

Can Japanese nationals obtain the MAFF Bronze certification?

No.
The Certification of Cooking Skills for Japanese Cuisine in Foreign Countries is a Japanese government scheme for chefs of non-Japanese nationality.
The Japanese Cooking Fundamental Skills Certification itself is open to everyone.

Can my school or company enroll a group?

Yes.
The same course is available with group pricing for culinary schools, restaurants, hotels and companies: a base fee for up to 10 students plus a per-student rate from the 11th.
